the children and a rabbit
Three children find a small rabbit resting on brittle winter ice that crackles even when it should be quiet. Why is he so still? He must be sleeping, resting, resting, quiet, sleeping, still. Don't wake him. The smallest child picks up some snow and covers up the rabbit gently. This blanket will keep him warm. They leave the rabbit and turn home. The cold, chilling wind crumbles against their young, soft skin. They wonder: when spring comes, will the rabbit wake up?
